If you’re a makeup addict like me, chances are you have a few products that you absolutely cannot live without. Like, if you were stranded on a deserted island, those products are what you would bring with you. If you had the option to bring makeup products to a deserted island, that is. But sometimes your favorites can get boring, and you want to change things up.

Or maybe you’re new to makeup and not quite sure where to start. Maybe you’re wandering around Sephora feeling like a lost tourist that doesn’t speak the language of the country they’re visiting. The perfectly made up employees ask you if you need help, but you don’t even know exactly what you need help with. I know what that feels like, and now I’m here to help.

Whether you’re a makeup connoisseur or a thirteen-year-old whose parents finally let them wear makeup, you’re on the lookout for new products to try. So if you need some suggestions, here are the 6 beauty products I can’t live without.

Neutrogena Healthy Defense Daily Moisturizer

I have a pale complexion, and if you’re anything like me, you burn in the shade. You can’t skip the skincare. In order to have a good base for makeup, you need to have healthy skin! That’s why I never leave my apartment without applying this moisturizer, whether I’m wearing makeup or not. It doubles as a sunscreen with SPF 50 and it’s oil-free, so it won’t feel greasy on your skin. And for the acne-prone people out there, it won’t clog your pores. It also sits well under a primer or foundation. Not to mention it’s waterproof, so go ahead and wear it on those sunny beach days! I especially love the dewy glow it gives me, making me look alive and awake even when I’m sleep deprived.

MAC Studio Fix Fluid Foundation

As an acne sufferer, high-coverage foundation is a must for me. But some of the foundations I tried were too oily, or they clogged my pores and caused me to break out more. And then there were foundations that had barely any coverage at all. But the Studio Fix Fluid is the real deal for me. It covers breakouts, redness, and unevenness while still looking natural on my skin. It comes in 53 different shades so you’re bound to find a fit, no matter your skin tone. It’s also long-lasting, so I can trust that this foundation will stay put. I apply it with a makeup sponge, add some concealer, swipe on my favorite setting powder, and I am good to go for the whole day.

Coty Airspun Powder

I’ve always had a love-hate relationship with powder. It was necessary to set my makeup for shows and concerts, but I would often be sporting the cake-face look I often had in middle school. And the powders I tried that I did like ended up being way out of my budget. But Coty Airspun powder was the answer to my prayers. It gives you a perfect matte finish while not drying your skin. It’s also very lightweight and doesn’t go on cakey, so I avoid that cake-face look. I also like to carry it with me for touch-ups throughout the day.

Urban Decay Eye Primer

Out of all the makeup I own, my eyeshadows are my most treasured. I’ve always been the biggest eyeshadow addict. I could spend hours in Sephora, swatching everything and comparing brands. But no matter the brand I used, I always had problems with creasing. I’d spend so much time on my eyeshadow, only for it to crease within a couple of hours. But then I tried this eye primer, and I haven’t had creasing eye shadow since. No matter how much I sweat, no matter how oily my skin gets, my eyeshadow looks as intense as it did when I first applied it.

L’Oreal Lash Paradise Mascara

I’m very thankful that I was one of the lucky people who was born with long lashes. But most mascaras I tried were too thick, dragging my lashes down and clumping them together. And some other mascaras I tried were too thin, not doing anything whatsoever. Lash Paradise has been my go-to mascara for two years now and I’m never going back. It makes my long lashes even longer and lifts them up. And it doesn’t clump! Use a lash curler beforehand to get an extra lift in those lashes.

Milani Amore Matte Lip Creme

My latest makeup obsession has been matte liquid lipsticks. And every time I go to a drugstore, I have to stop at the makeup aisle to see if my favorite liquid lip is there. Out of all my lipsticks, the Amore Matte Lip Creme has gotten me the most compliments. It’s bold, smudge-proof, has fantastic coverage, and is the longest-lasting lipstick I own. The only downside is that it stains, but that’s nothing a good makeup remover can’t fix!

Just remember, makeup isn’t a one size fits all thing. It can take time and lots of experimenting to find the products that work the best for you. Just because these products work well for me, doesn’t mean they will work well for you. The important thing is to not get frustrated or discouraged. If something doesn’t work, just wipe it off and start again. Remember, makeup is fun, so just see this as a chance to play. Now go raid the makeup aisle, and may your highlight be as bright as your dreams.
