Did you know that your biggest contribution to plastic waste might be sitting in your bathroom cupboard? When it comes to waste, the beauty industry is one of the biggest sinners, producing a whopping 120 billion units of plastic packaging each year, 70% of that ending up in landfills.

But don’t worry, your journey to sustainable living doesn’t mean you have to give up soft, glowing, nourished skin. More and more skincare brands are pushing back against the wastefulness of the beauty industry. Here are just a few of the sustainable skincare brands devoted to creating products that are good for both you and the planet.

Blendily

All of Blendily’s products are vegan and preservative-free. Based in the Pacific Northwest, Blendily grows many of their ingredients in their own gardens, and what they don’t grow themselves, they source from local farmers and the wilderness around them. They consider themselves “seed to soul”, cultivating a relationship between the consumer and the land.

As for packaging, the vast majority of Blendily’s packaging is glass. They encourage customers to ship empty containers back to them, where they can be reused or recycled. For shipments, they avoid using bubble wrap or packing peanuts, instead opting for recycled paper.

Glow Recipe

Glow Recipe avoids using harmful ingredients such as microplastics and oxybenzone. Instead, they source ingredients with as low an environmental impact as possible, including upcycled sugarcane. Their efforts have paid off, since they are officially carbon neutral as of April 2022.

All of Glow Recipe’s products are recyclable. The glass containers they use are made up of 20% recycled glass and their shipping containers are made of 100% post-consumer waste. They’ve also partnered with TerraCycle, where customers can request a shipping envelope and send their empty containers to be recycled.

Youth To The People

Not only are YTTP’s products vegan and cruelty-free, most of their ingredients are locally sourced near their headquarters in California. They’re also working to achieve net zero carbon emissions and they’ve committed to a 25% energy reduction by 2025.

The products all come in recyclable and reusable glass containers with lids made from Post-Consumer Recycled material. The packaging the products are shipped in is also recyclable.

Ethique

Ethique founder Brianne West started the brand after learning that 95% of a bottle of conditioner is made up of water. Now, Ethique’s shampoo, conditioner, and body bars help to cut down water and plastic waste.

All of Ethique’s products are vegan, cruelty-free, and biodegradable. And while they offset 120% of their carbon emissions (they plant one tree for each order), their main goal is lowering them. Their packaging is 100% plastic free and made from sustainably sourced forestry. All packaging is compostable (even the packing tape).
